The Hidden Pitfalls of Using Classic Cars for Movie Shoots (What Every Car Owner Needs to Know)

I became great friends with the actor Gilles Marini on set. One of the perks is meeting very interesting people and having a great time while shooting w your car.

The Hidden Pitfalls of Using Classic Cars for Movie Shoots (What Every Car Owner Needs to Know)

At PhotoWhips, we connect incredible cars with photographers and filmmakers around the world. While movie shoots with classic cars can be exciting and profitable, they come with a very different set of challenges compared to a typical photoshoot.

If you’re thinking about listing your car for film production, video shoots, or commercial filming, here’s what you need to understand before you say yes.

1. Movie Shoots Are Time-Intensive (Much More Than Photoshoots)

Unlike a standard car photoshoot, which might last a couple of hours, film productions can run all day—or multiple days.

Expect:

* Long wait times between scenes

* Repeated takes from different angles

* Delays due to lighting, crew setup, or talent

If you’re bringing your vehicle to a movie set, plan for a full-day commitment at minimum.

2. Your Car Will Not Stay “Showroom Perfect”

One of the biggest misconceptions about filming with classic cars is that they stay pristine.

In reality, they don’t.

We recently completed a shoot with a 1964 Pontiac GTO in a dusty location. By the end of the day, the car was completely covered in dirt.

Common risks include:

* Dust, dirt, and debris buildup

* Road grime from repeated driving

* Fingerprints and contact from crew members

If you’re providing a vintage car for filming, understand that perfection at the start does not mean perfection at the end.

3. Constant Movement and Repositioning

During a film shoot, your car won’t just sit still.

You may be asked to:

* Move the car repeatedly between takes

* Reposition for lighting and camera angles

* Drive short distances over and over

This creates:

* Increased wear and tear

* Higher risk of minor damage

* More responsibility for the owner

4. Set Clear Rules Before the Shoot Starts

This is critical.

Before any movie production using your car, you need to establish firm boundaries:

* Who is allowed to drive the vehicle

* Where the car can and cannot go

* What conditions are acceptable (terrain, weather, etc.)

At PhotoWhips, we strongly recommend making it clear that:

You will charge in full for any damage, no exceptions.

Setting expectations early prevents problems later.

5. Always Require a Certificate of Insurance (COI)

If you take one thing from this article, let it be this:

Never release your car to a film production without a Certificate of Insurance (COI).

A COI should:

* Name you as additionally insured

* Cover the full value of your vehicle

* Protect you from liability during the shoot

Without proper film production insurance, you are taking on unnecessary risk.

6. Driving Policy: Control vs. Time Commitment

At PhotoWhips, we do not allow anyone else to drive our cars.

This reduces risk—but it comes with a tradeoff:

* You must be present the entire time

* You’ll be responsible for all vehicle movement

* Shoots may take longer because everything runs through you

Each owner needs to decide:

* Maximum control (you drive)

* or

* More flexibility (production drives, higher risk)

7. Pricing Your Car for Film Work

Because of the added complexity, movie shoots should always be priced higher than standard photoshoots.

Why?

* Longer hours

* Increased wear and tear

* Higher risk exposure

* Greater involvement from you as the owner

If you’re listing on PhotoWhips, make sure your film production rate reflects the true cost of participation.

Final Thoughts: Be Prepared, Not Surprised

Using your car for a movie shoot, commercial production, or video filming can be a great opportunity—but only if you go in prepared.

Remember:

* Your car will get dirty

* The day will run long

* You’ll be more involved than expected

* Protection (rules + insurance) is everything

At PhotoWhips, we’re building a platform that connects car owners and creatives worldwide—but success comes from understanding both the opportunity and the risks.

If you’re ready to list your car for film and photoshoots, do it the right way—and protect your asset every step of the process.
